Challenge, Context & Objectives
The 2001 Bhuj earthquake devastated Gujarat, claiming over 20,000 lives and leaving an indelible mark on
the region. Two decades later, the challenge was twofold:
- Create a memorial that could effectively educate a new generation about a tragedy they hadn't
experienced firsthand.
- Transform a narrative of destruction into one of hope and resilience, inspiring action rather than
despair.
Traditional static memorials often struggle to engage visitors emotionally and educationally. Our
objectives were ambitious:
- Increase visitor engagement time

- Drive an increase in disaster preparedness awareness among visitors

- Evolution Projection Passage: As visitors walk, a dynamic projection surface depicts stages of human
evolution, compressing millennia into moments and contextualizing the earthquake within human history.
- Kinetic Gujarat Map: A projection wall with moving cubes forms Gujarat's map, syncing perfectly with
content to illustrate the earthquake's impact and subsequent recovery efforts.
- Interactive Ecosystem Display: A dial-based interface allows visitors to explore Gujarat's diverse
wildlife across seasons, projected onto a large curved surface, emphasizing the region's natural
resilience.
